Great news. Those pesky Rooskies who were plotting to steal my thunder by striking a golf ball in space have had to postpone their plans. (see this nytimes article).
The stunt was originally orchestrated by the Element 21 Golf Company who paid the Russians
"an unspecified amount" to smack
a special radio-transmitting ball into a three-year
orbit of Earth, using a specially made golf club (that I believe is already stashed aboard the International Space Station (ISS) - clubs in space!).
Apparently NASA has got all hoity-toity about safety issues, suggesting that the swinging club or the ball might damage the ISS or knock a bit of foam off the shuttle or something. Anyway, there's still a possibility of the event being re-scheduled for the autumn. I suppose I have to see it as a steop in the right direction...
