Jonathan, yet again you have come up with a really good lead. I understand that there were actually 24 towns in France, corresponding to the 24 letters of the Greek alphabet. I believe Jean Luc Godard made a film about one of them. I myself have holidayed in Rhoville.

Their British equivalents are much harder to track down. Your postcode suggestion is great. I will look into that. A friend of mine who drinks in a postie pub in Clerkenwell London (the Penny Black) tells me that he had heard beery talk of 26 missing towns, each one labelled by a letter of our own alphabet. He wondered therefore if I should be looking for O-Town or Oton.

To check out his theory more thoroughly I thought I might take a trip to Eton...
